Carl Sagan was a planetary scientist at Cornell University and the best-known public voice of space exploration in his era, reaching a vast audience through the 1980 television series Cosmos and his books. He helped conceive the plaques carried by Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11, chaired the committee that assembled the Golden Record aboard Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, and urged the "Pale Blue Dot" photograph of Earth, about which he wrote some of the most quoted lines in the literature of science.
