The Golden Record is a 12-inch gold-plated phonograph record carried by both Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 — a message to any finder. Compiled by a committee chaired by Carl Sagan, it carries greetings in dozens of languages, sounds of Earth, music from many cultures, and encoded images, with playing instructions etched on its cover. It is less an instrument than a gesture: the two copies are now the farthest-traveled human artifacts.
