Eugene Parker, a University of Chicago astrophysicist, predicted in 1958 that the Sun continuously streams charged particles into space — the solar wind — a claim met with deep skepticism until spacecraft confirmed it within a few years. Sixty years later, Parker Solar Probe was named for him — the first NASA mission named for a living person — and he attended its 2018 launch.
