Eugene Shoemaker essentially founded the field of astrogeology, established the U.S. Geological Survey's astrogeology program, trained Apollo astronauts in field geology, and with his wife Carolyn and David Levy co-discovered comet Shoemaker–Levy 9, whose 1994 impact into Jupiter was watched by telescopes everywhere and by Galileo. After his death in a car accident in 1997, the asteroid mission NEAR was renamed NEAR Shoemaker in his honor, and a portion of his ashes was carried to the Moon — making him, so far, the only person buried there.
