Mariner 4's television camera took the first close-up photographs of another planet. During the July 1965 Mars flyby it recorded 21 complete pictures onto an onboard tape recorder, which then trickled them back to Earth over weeks at about eight bits per second. The cratered landscape in those frames rewrote the scientific picture of Mars.
