The Halley Multicolour Camera was Giotto's imaging instrument, designed to photograph a comet's nucleus during a flyby at nearly 70 kilometers per second. In March 1986 it returned the first close images of any comet nucleus before dust impacts around closest approach ended its operation. Its pictures showed Halley's nucleus to be one of the darkest objects known in the solar system.
