Itokawa is a small near-Earth asteroid, only a few hundred meters long, that turned out to be a "rubble pile" — a loose gravitational heap of boulders rather than a solid rock. Hayabusa reached it in 2005 and brought grains of its surface back to Earth in 2010, the first samples ever returned from an asteroid.
