Halley's Comet returns to the inner solar system about every 76 years, and its 1986 apparition was met by an international fleet of spacecraft. Of the probes on record here, Giotto made the closest pass, returning the first pictures of a comet's nucleus — a dark, peanut-shaped body blacker than coal, jetting gas and dust.
