Mars has drawn more spacecraft than any planet beyond Earth. Of the probes on record here, Mariner 4 made the first successful flyby in 1965, returning close-up pictures that showed a cratered, seemingly dead world; Viking 1 made the first fully successful landing in 1976 and searched its soil for signs of life.
