Venus, nearly Earth's twin in size, hides a surface hot enough to melt lead beneath a crushing carbon-dioxide atmosphere. Venera 9 returned the first photographs from its surface in 1975 — the first images from the surface of any other planet. Parker Solar Probe has flown past Venus repeatedly, using its gravity to spiral toward the Sun; other missions have used the same road.
