Earth's Moon was the first destination beyond Earth, and the early Soviet Luna series racked up its firsts. Of the probes on record here, Luna 3 photographed the far side in 1959 — the first time anyone saw it — revealing a hemisphere strikingly poorer in dark maria than the side that faces us.
