JAXA, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, was formed in 2003 by the merger of Japan's three space institutions, including the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), whose scientific spacecraft tradition it carries on. Of the probes on record here it operated Hayabusa, the first asteroid sample-return mission, developed at ISAS.
